Before the airwaves died – a #poem by M J Jenkinson

Before the airwaves died and the wire failed

There were stories of how it came to pass

Out in the Caucasus they blew the pipeline

That carried west the gas.

/

Diplomacy ran its course

Until the bear, its chains did break

As buried cold war nightmares

Shook themselves awake

/

And there are rumours

That the thoughts we are having aren’t even our own

And the dream you had last night might be a future you remember

Or a past that’s yet to come.

/

Before the airwaves died and the wire failed

There were tales of how it occurred

Across a border in the Middle East

Stray gunfire was heard

/

And a poison stew came to the boil

No-one would be denied

As Two thousand years of venom

Tore at the earth’s insides

/

And there are rumours

That they are slaying people on the edge of town

So let’s sit closely by the fire tonight

On our little patch of ground
