  1. As the last lights were about to go out, The Last Politician saw his chance to seize power; a televievision broadcast, on the last of the nations power; an Amygdala hijack to feed the peoples growing fears.

An ancient tool of the mind, used by musicians, actors, comedians, stage hypnotists, journalists, politicians and double glazing snake oil salesmen, since dawn time. Startle them, feed the fears, turn off their concsious mind and let the old lizard of emotion and threat, then take control.

“Lookout! There’s a lion behind you! Do as I say!” A fine Jape for the comedian or the horror theatre. The crash of drum or symbol and a song of sadness or heroism for the musician to stir the soul but a darker art for the confidense trickster, the shock jock and The Last Politican’s speech:

“There now follows a party political broadcast on behalf of: The Last Politician.”

    Speech of the Last Politician.

“I don’t have to tell you things are rough.
    Everybody knows things are rough.
    It’s a double dip depression.
Everybody’s unemployed or frightened of losing their job.
The Bankers are ripping us off.
You need a credit card to buy a loaf.
Children are murdered in the parks.
Or burned alive in their beds
Criminals are running wild the streets
And no one is doing a thing.

    So listen here.
We know our world sweats a fever,
    under a blanket of CO2
The bio-engineered food we eat is tainted with chemicals,
and radioactive dust from exploding nuclear power plants.
So we anaesthetise our selves watching soap operas and talent shows on our HD TVs.
While some news reporter tells us the world is falling apart around our ears.
    As if that was normal.

Train fares increase faster than wages.
They tax our food and beer
    Fuel prices rise every day.
    We know things are bad.
    Worse than bad.
    They’re crazy.

People don’t go out any more.
Your local pubs are closing because they don’t have the customers.
Instead we cower in our homes,
As our world gets smaller and smaller.
    Crying, “Please leave me alone.
Let me have my mobile phone, my HD TV, and my Internet and I will shut up.”
Well I’m not going to let you shut up.
Because I want things to be different.

I don’t want you to join a protest.
    Or run riot.
I don’t want you to write to the old politicians,
because we know, they don’t work.

I don’t know, what to do about the double dip depression,
    and the inflation,
    and the Iranians
and the addicts begging in the streets.
All I know is first up,
    You’ve got to get angry.

You’ve got to say, “I’m a human being!”
    “Damn you!”
    “My life is important.”
So, I want you to get up now.

I want all of you to get up out of your chairs.
I want you to get up right now.
    Right now I tell you.
I want you to stand up and yell:
“I am sick of this crap
    Things have got to change!”

Things have got to be different my friends.
    You’ve got to get angry.
    You’ve got to tell them,
    You’ve got to yell,
” I am sick of this crap
    Things have got to change!”

Then we can figure out what to do about the double dip depression,
and the inflation, and the oil prices and the Junkies.
But first of all you have got stand up
    And you’ve got to yell,
” I am sick of this crap
    Things have got to change!”

A re-imagining and updating by Ian Glen Walker, AKA The Last Politician; of the speech written by Paddy Chayefsky and given by Peter Finch as the Character Howard Beale in the MGM and UA film Network.

but before the The Last Politician could deploy those last words, that for things to change; the audience should vote for The Last Politician, there came:

“We Interupt this broadcast to bring you breaking news!”

And The Last Politicians arrow; doomed anyway by the end of all The Last Politician hoped to hold, went awry.
